What I remember most isn&#8217;t only the excitement of meeting a baseball hero. It is his extraordinary patience and kindness\u2014and one very embarrassing mistake I made with my camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my book, <em>Paul&#8217;s Sweet Shop<\/em>, I had Paul remind a dad to make sure he had film in his camera before taking a birthday picture of his son. I included that little detail because of my own embarrassing experience the day my family met Tommy John.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1987, when our younger son, Matt, turned ten, our gift to him was a day at Tommy John&#8217;s Baseball Camp in New Jersey. When she was a young adult, she had given horseback riding lessons to Tommy John&#8217;s children in New Jersey. When it was our turn, he looked up, saw Mavra, immediately jumped up, and gave her a hug. She introduced us, and we asked if we might take some pictures with him. He graciously told us that as soon as registration was finished, he would come find us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And true to his word, he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I happily started snapping pictures of Tommy John with my sons. Then I happened to look down at the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was no film in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was horrified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we were having this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Tommy John had taken the time to pose with our children, and I hadn&#8217;t taken a single picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t know where I found the courage, but I admitted what I had done and asked if we could leave, find someplace to buy film, and possibly take the pictures again later. I was absolutely mortified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tommy John couldn&#8217;t have been kinder. Remember, there were no cell phones or GPS systems back then and we had no idea where we were.
